Open to all artists regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, Beyond the Binaries encourages artists to think of art as a tool for activism and the promotion of social equality.

Stephen Fry said “All who value truth, freedom and human variety will be as delighted as I am to support the Emerald Winter Pride Art Awards, which have become recognised as a cradle for new artistic talent. Promoting cutting-edge art and emerging artists, the Art Awards is a true forum for discussion and communication about a wide range of LGBTQI+ subjects and issues.”

Beyond the Binaries invites art that looks past the black and white; that explores the spaces, the identities, the world that exists beyond and in-between these poles. The world and its inhabitants exist as a vast spectrum and Beyond the Binaries looks to celebrate this palette.

Winter Pride Art Awards selection panellist Brenda Emmanus said “Artists are invited to create work that stimulates dialogue about the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and straight identities.”

Emerald Life is once again proud to sponsor the Emerald Winter Pride Art Awards and will give £1,000 prize money to the overall winner.

Heidi McCormack, Emerald Life CEO said, “The Winter Pride Arts Awards brings further momentum to what has been an epic year with the likes of Queer British Art at the Tate and British Museum’s exploring LGBTQ histories. We can’t wait to see the entries for this year’s theme, Beyond the Binaries, and celebrate creativity and diversity – two things near and dear to Emerald’s heart. It is important to make sure that Pride events embrace arts and the Emerald Winter Pride Arts Awards does just that.”

The House of St Barnabas will host the 6-month exhibition as part of their not-for-profit art programme, The Collective, which encapsulates the essence of the charity in its ethos of collaboration and its commitment to nurturing talent. The awards ceremony, private view and a series of artists’ talks will be held in their Georgian townhouse in the heart of Soho. 25% commission from the sale of all artworks will be donated to The House of St Barnabas charity. The House of St Barnabas is a charity pledging to break the cycle of homelessness and social exclusion in London. They run a social enterprise, a not-for-profit members’ club, to help the people they support back into lasting paid work. Their Employment Academy offers accredited qualifications, on-site work experience, real job opportunities and mentoring.
